How to: Defragment a hard drive.
Solution:
Open 'Disk Defragmenter' in 'System Tools' from the 'Accessories' menu.
1) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
2) Select 'Programs' and select 'Accessories'.
3) Select the 'System Tools' menu and select 'Disk Defragmenter'. (The 'Select Drive' dialog box appears.)
4) Select the local hard disk to be defragmented from the drop-down list box. (The 'Disk Defragmenter' dialog box appears, stating whether defragmentation is recommended for this disk.)
NOTE: If the 'Disk Defragmenter' dialog box states that it is not necessary to defragment the drive you have selected, click 'Select Drive' to defragment another drive or click 'Exit' to end 'Disk Defragmenter'.
5) (Optional) Click 'Advanced...' to specify whether the drive should be checked for errors or to specify a defragmentation method. (The 'Advanced Options' dialog box appears.)
a) Select one of the following options from the 'Defragment Method' group (depending on how badly the disk is fragmented):
1] 'Full defragmentation (both files and free space)'.
2] 'Defragment files only'.
3] 'Consolidate free space only'.
b) Select the 'Check drive for errors' check box to scan the drive for errors.
c) Do one of the following:
1] Select the 'This time only. Next time, use the defaults again' radio button in the 'When do you want to use these options' group.
2] Select the 'Save these options and use them every time' radio button.
d) Click 'OK'. (The 'Disk Defragmenter' dialog box reappears.)
6) Click 'Start' to begin defragmenting the drive.
7) When the disk is finished defragmenting, click 'Yes' to quit or 'No' to defragment another disk.
